Email to General Membership: September 1, 2005

Aloha Members,

Thank you for attending our first general information meeting and
paying your dues!  We are excited to start off this new year with a
large student membership comprised of a whopping 50+ members!  As we
begin a new school year there are a few housekeeping matters to attend
to:

1) CONTACT INFORMATION
You may contact the PALSO officers
(Tiff, Brian, Becca, Robin, Glenn, Daryl, Megan, AP, and Augusto) at uhmpalso@hawaii.edu

For PALS professors and individual members, please refer to the
student services directory which will be mailed to you shortly.

2) ELECTIONS
Please refer to the attached document for information on our 2005
election!  We hope each of you recognizes this election as a great
opportunity to make a difference in PALSO and in our law school
community.  Whether you run for office or merely vote, YOU are making
PALSO a better organization.  Please stop by any of our carrels if you
need more information!

3) WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Whether or not you run for an officer position, PALSO NEEDS YOUR
HELP.  We will be sending out periodic emails requesting your help.
Our goal this year is 100% participation by every member.  This means
we might ask you to either pick up food, make rice, decorate, staff a
table or sell t-shirts AT LEAST ONCE THIS YEAR.  No biggie, right? ;)

4) GOT AN IDEA?
Let us know!  We are excited to hear your ideas.  If you know someone
who may make for an interesting guest speaker, contact us and we can
try to make it happen!

and lastly...

5)T-SHIRTS!
We picked up a fresh batch of t-shirts yesterday!  PALSO will be
selling shirts shortly but if you can't wait (I couldn't!) then see
Brian Gotanda (VP).  Shirts are $15!

And a friendly reminder to always check-out www.palso.org for your
latest PALSO information!  We are excited to have you all on-board!

Yours sincerely,

The Pacific-Asian Legal Studies Organization (PALSO)

supporting PALSO, and we hope to see you at our first event, the Around the World Night!

(Pre-meeting announcement)

Welcome back to school!

Join us for a general information session on Monday, August 29th in CR1.

Also meet our PALS professors and the 2L PALSO officers.
Thai food compliments of AP's mom will be served! (Paid PALSO members get first dibs).

  Wednesday, February 16
  12:40 - 1:30 p.m.
  CR 4

Professor Lee will be lecturing on:
"Towards and Equitable Resolution of Territorial and Maritime Delimitation Questions Between China and Japan:
With Particular Reference to Diayu Dao/Senkaku Islands and EEZ/Continental Shelf Delimitation."

Light lunch and refreshments will be served!

Professor Keun-Gwan Lee is currently an assistant professor of law at

University, Kyushu University). He has earned a LL.B. from College of
Law, Seoul National University, an LL. M. from Georgetown University Law
Center and a Ph.D. from Cambridge University.

Professor Lee's research interests include international law of state
succession, history and theory of international law: particularly the
reception of European international law in East Asia.  He is also interested in
a post-colonial critique of positive international law, such as legal relations between Korea
and Japan in regards to the illegality or otherwise of the Japanese
annexation of Korea, and the international law of the sea with special
emphasis on maritime delimitation in East Asia.

Thanks to those who attended, performed, and helped with our Chinese New Year Celebration!

The party was a complete success and has gotten some rave reviews from students and faculty.
We hope that those who could attend enjoyed themselves.
Pictures of the event will be posted soon in our Photo Gallery, so be sure to come back to check!

11/19/04 - Karaoke Night

Thanks to those who came out to the Karaoke Hut on Nov. 19th. We had a lot of fun
singing some very entertaining renditions of all sorts of songs! Take a look at the Photo Gallery for some
pictures of the event.

10/28/04 - "Preference For Posterity: A Discussion on Doe v. Kamehameha"

PALSO, `Ahahui O Hawai`i, and the Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies co-sponsored
two events that examined the historical, socio-economic, and legal context of Doe v. Kamehameha  (click for District Court decision)
one of the cases the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals heard on November 4th.

Here are some links to some more information on the Kamehameha case:

PALSO would like to thank those who participated in, contributed to, and attended these events. The discussion was lively,
thought provoking, engaging, and most of all, important to our understanding of not just the legal issues, but what the real
impact of this case really is. To access more information, please go to the Archives section of this site for links and other downloads.

Mahalo to `Ahahui O Hawai`i, the Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, and the discussion panel!
